Delay is an important metric in networking that measures the amount of time it takes for a bit of data to move from one endpoint to another. It is typically on the scale of fractions of seconds, and has several different components.

The four components come together to create the total delay in a network. Check out the infographic below for an explanation of the different components of delay.
