WebRTC is still relatively new, having been released in 2011. However, it has built a significant following, and is being used by several high-profile companies including Google, Facebook, and Amazon.
This year, version 1.0 of WebRTC was officially considered feature complete by the W3C. Now, we take a look at the different verticals WebRTC is currently impacting and where it looks to go in the future.
What is WebRTC?
Web Real-time Communications (WebRTC) is an open-source project created by Google to enable peer-to-peer communication in the web browser through application programming interfaces. It eliminates the need for plugins and native app installations to make peer-to-peer communication user- and developer-friendly. This includes audio, video, and data transfers. WebRTC lets developers create high-quality real-time communications applications in Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Android, and natively on iOS and Android.
What Industries/Verticals are Interested in WebRTC?
WebRTC makes it easy for developers to create customized solutions to different audiences and industry verticals. We are seeing WebRTC expand beyond the classic five industries of:
